I'm a fan of Pinoy action films. Sadly, they did not evolve in terms of plot and more importantly the STAGING of action scenes. Even a simple (and even hackneyed) plot can be salvaged by great action staging. Look at the Hong Kong, Thai and now even Indonesian action films. Their plots are simple but the way they stage the action scenes, particularly the fight scenes, are incredible to watch. They don't even need loud explosions and fancy camera work. They highlight their own martial arts (kung fu, muay thai, silat etc.) to create a powerful nationalistic statement. Even Vietnam is producing topnotch action films that make them proud of their culture. There's none of that in our films. The industry says, "Kaya ng Pinoy!" "Be proud!" "Support our films!" but the films themselves don't make us proud!
It's Hollywood that uses Filipino martial arts (The Bourne films, The Hunted, 300, Die Hard 4 etc.) to great effect. We don't do that!

I hope they remake Kamagong with great arnis fight scenes. The first one was okay but the main bad guy wasn't really good at arnis so he wasn't credible as the main villain.The story is solid enough.

I agree, it has diminished if not totally gone. Asiong Salonga has taken a big risk of being the first to ever bring back the genre - and banking on a not so prominent lead actor like Estregan Jr. - but, in my opinion, I think that movie was a good decision on the part of the producers. It was the best among the MMFF entries (in my opinion). I believe the genre is coming back, with Cesar Montano's 'Hitman' to hit the screen soon.

the quality of our action films are not that great... in fact, we should be thankful for piracy because now, producers are creating movies that are almost worth watching in theaters...

I'm not a fan of the Filipino action movies, or at least the ones na naabutan ko. But it'll be great if the Filipino film makers can come up with something which can pull me into watching one. ;)

But if done correctly, an action film can be one entertaining action pack ride. Sadly, the Philippine cinema gave up on the action genre because of the things I stated here plus what you've just added.

After Asiong Salonga, I am optimistic that Philippine film studios have realized that the Filipinos missed the action genre. Hopefully they learned from mistakes of past action films and corrects it by reviving the genre cliche-free and with great quality and story.
